Hey folks , on the way home to Ottawa from Newfoundland my bike started making a ticking sound ...it seemed to be losing power along the way so I had plugs changed and tightened battery terminal .. after the ticking started the bike just powered right out and I was stuck on the side of the highway ... I had it towed to a nearby mechanic who said it was seized... the mechanic wasn't bilingual and my French isn't good at all.. I was just wondering if there was a way to be certain that it is fatally seized .. I have another gs 400s in my garage that I can use for parts ... any suggestions?

did it have enough oil
I would pull the valve trin cover and inspect the valve clearance
I have seen adjsuters nuts come off and that can cause major issuues
Id alos pull the plugs and see if the starter will spin the uncompressed engine over1983 GS 550 LD

You can take off the right side crank cover and with a wrench try to rotate the crankshaft....clock-wise only.
Obviously the bike in this thread is different but have a look at the second photo.

Take it home, figure it out. I wouldn't take the word of a mechanic who doesn't speak English enough to understand as a diagnosis of a problem.Comment
