1979 GS850 headgasket replacement. Carb rebuild.

    Hello everyone,
I am getting ready to rebuild my engine on the bike mentioned above.

I am inexperienced when it comes to this so anyone with experience would be helpful.
What i set out to do:
    reseat the valves to spec
    Rebuild the carbs
    Replace the gaskets:
    valve cover
    headgasket
    Anymore while im here?

Ive asked a few mechanic friends to be a saftey safety net if i get stuck and none are interested.

Anyone have any experience where i might need to be careful and pay attention to detail?

    Ethan

Don't forget the cylinder base gasket, cylinder sleeve o-rings and oval o-rings that go around the rear outer studs.
You CANNOT simply do a head job on one of these and think you'll get away without replacing the bottom gasket (and other bits).

Yep, as Grimly said, must do base gasket too. May as well do rings, ‘cause why not? And while the head’s off, may as well do valve seals. You can see how these things quickly snowball.

First off, get a service manual and read all appropriate sections, twice. Then read it again before you get started. Make sure you have all the tools you need, including torque wrench(es).
