Intermittent top end rattle....only when hot

Tak Tak Tok....one thousand and one....Tak Tak Tok (and repeat)
Hi folks, been guided here for some advice and I think I have read everything on the net as to what it might be. Naaaarrrg!
    1980 GS1000 G 64,000 Kms...new to me
    Noise goes above 1500 RPM
Tilting bike doesn't effect noise in any way, does this eliminate cam end float?
If it was end float, why would it not do it when cold?
If its timing chain, again why not when cold?
Bike runs fine and strong. Just changed oil and filter.
Im about to lift the cam cover, would really appreciate any pointers as to where to look for the source of the noise?
Thanks for taking the time to read this

With motor running try to pinpoint the location of the clacking by using a screwdriver. Place the bit end against the engine and the handle to your ear. Should give a good idea of noise location this way. Just move it around until you hear it the loudest.

It MIGHT be the infamous GS "cam-walk" noise.
Many threads here on the cause of it.
