How to replace GS1000 cam chain guides?

How do you replace the cam chain guides on a '80 GS1000? I don't see any mention of it in my Clymer or factory service manuals. How big of a job is it?

Easy - once you've got the cylinders off.

Yep, that back one (that the tensioner pushes on) is anchored between the cylinder block and the top case. The front one is possible with only the cylinder head off.

Why do you think you need to replace them? Lots of black plastic bits in the oil?
