Clutch Hub does not spin in Neutral

I'm having a problem with my 85 600zx but this may be applied to any bike.

With the bike in neutral should the clutch hub rotate freely?

The neural light is on and when i shift it into gear the light goes out like it's supposed to. The one thing i have not tried is taking it off the lift and see if it is actually in gear or not when the light is/is not lite.

I was having the problem while it is at idle while on the lift. When i let the clutch out the motor would die. If i hold the clutch in it would be fine. I think i have ruled out the clutch switch. I know the switch is not a factor b/c the plastic projection that mates with the clutch lever is broken off so the switch should not be a factor.

Also, When starting the bike the clutch would have to be engaged even after bypassing the safety switch.

When the starter is cranking and the clutch lever pulled in it will crank over fast and the bike will start. But when i try starting the bike without engaging the clutch lever the motor does not crank over as fast and the bike will not start.

I was thinking the clutch plates are dragging too much so i pulled the clutch cover. I took out the clutch fibers and steel plates. The steel plates where rusted and pitted so i was thinking this could be one reason why the plates where grabbing.

Also, after removing the fibers and steel plates i thought i would see if the hub spins clockwise freely. The hub turns MAYBE an 1/8th" but no more than a 1/4" turn then comes to a stop. Something is preventing it from spinning CW any farther.

I just tore down another 85 600zx clutch and the hub spun freely.

I haven't taken the clutch hub and basket off yet.

Any ideas to the problem and can it be fixed fairly easily?

do these pieces have anything to do with it? Just dropped the oil pan and looky what I found.





I do not know what they are except for the oil drain bolt.

looks like the oil pump clip. the oil pump runs off the clutch hub. only the inner hub will spin in neutral since the outer runs off the crank.

the other pieces are definitely teeth from a sprocket. Must be an oil pump sprocket in there somewhere?

Can this be replaced without splitting the cases or intense time labor?

pull the clutch hub and have a looksy.

Here is the clutch hub but not removed yet as i need to get a 30mm socket and make or buy a tool to hold the basket/hub from rotating.



The smaller sprocket on the right is all there, no missing teeth or anything. Is this sprocket for the oil pump? I think it is according to my manual.

The bigger sprocket on the back side of the basket is all there, no missing teeth.

I have turned the ignition bolt clockwise to see these sprockets rotate. The basket seems to rotate counterclockwise.

Obviously this is new to me. I've changed the clutch springs and taken out the fibers and steels before but that's about it.

Please let me know if i am not identifying the parts (sprockets) correctly.

I just took a look up thru the oil pan area and as i'm trying to turn the clutch basket i can see a gear/sprocket rotating and i really think i see some missing teeth on the gear/sprocket.

Doesn't look good does it?????
