    oil pan gasket

85 gs 700 e . I currently have my oil pan off since the gasket was leaking . I do not want to wait a week or two for a new gasket . Thinking of just using gasket maker. Will this work ? My buddy is currently running his 550 with gasket maker only on the pan has not had any problems so far . Just looking for some input . Thanks 70GT

Try it if you want, but most here would recommend against it.

I think you'd be better off finding someone that has the correct gasket and paying overnight shipping or make your own than to risk a gob of that stuff coming loose and floating around your oil passages. But I also know of a lot of people that have used it on valve covers and oil pans on car engines and not had any problems except further leaks.

If you have the old gasket to use as a template you could always cut one from gasket paper. Safer than silicone.

Cant you just use the oil pan itself as a template?

Should be able to. I suggest you look at the parts fishe and see how Suzuki made cutouts in the gasket to allow oil to flow where they wanted it to.

Permatex Ultra Black RTV has excellent oil resistance and is a good choice for oil pans. I've used it for oil pans on cars without any problems, no reason it wouldn't work on a bike.

Only reason I can think of is elevated temperatures. Besides the engine itself running a bit warmer, the oil pan is just an inch or so above the exhaust pipe. In my opinion, that's not a place to experiment with a gasket.

As I mentioned early in the thread, "try it if you want, ..."

Permatex makes a high temp red RTV up to 650 degrees. I've used the ultra black to seal the filter cover on my 16v engine and it sits behind the exhaust header. Never had a problem with it leaking because of excess heat. I believe the black is good for up to 500 degrees intermittent.
