It's not a matter of opinion. A Barnett clutch pack WILL lead to a severely grooved clutch basket. A lot of the guys that "need" a Barnett pack end up blowing up the basket before they groove it, or they have a stack of spares laying around. You might be able to engineer a solution, but it will end up costing many times the price of just buying OEM plates, and there's a good chance it won't last anyways. OEM clutch packs stand up to 200 HP drag bikes that run on a smaller slick, and will last when treated right.

FYI: The original problem you had was slipping at higher rpms? That's usually an indication that you just need new pressure plate springs. Sell/trade the Barnett set for some Barnett pressure plate springs, and see if that doesn't clear up your problem.

Does anyone have any input on the Barnett springs that are sold with the clutch packs. I don't know if these are offered in different pressures.

Oddly enough I tore down a GS 1100E engine that I had put about 20,000 miles on years ago. I Bought the 81 1100E from a local Suzuki race team, it was some type of factory bike that the team got from Suzuki. It had a 10 disc clutch pack in it, I am assuming it is a Barnett pack. The basket does have some grooves in it. So I am seeing first hand a beat basket from a ten disc pack. The engine was set up with VM33's, Yosh cams, some porting, and Yosh pipe. The engine was pretty strong, and the clutch feel was OK. I didnt beat it but I ran it hard sometimes, the flywheel twisted the end of the crank off at about 11,500 and it has sat for 20 years.


As far as it costing me to screw with it, I am retired and I actually enjoy making custom pieces, having a machine shop doesn't hurt.

barnett gold springs is what you want to use with OEM plates.
3 gold....3 stock OEM springs.

yes thinner plates will groove faster but steel backed fibers will destroy baskets whether there is 1 plate or 10 plates.
did you see earlier where i asked you what material your barnett fiber backings was made from?
i asked aluminum or steel.

OEM except for the 83E/ES is and has always been made from aluminum.
i have not had a set of barnettrs in my hands for a few years..

The barnett backings are steel, and I can see how that would pound the basket. I will post when I open it up and check out the clutch. The springs I have are the barnett gold, so it looks like I am in luck there. Lots of input on these, it is nice to have experienced feedback even if it isn't what you wanted to hear.
