Identify this

Unidentified fouling object...

1980 GS850G found between the crank gear and the timing chain.

any idea on what it might be? (sorry, but I haven't looked through the parts illustrations or the shop manual yet)

to me, appears to be a broken segment of something similar to a piece to retain something such as your clutch cable, or speedometer cable so it doesnt flop around everywhere.

I'll go with bobthebiker, it looks like the wire bracket that screws to the front fork leg to support the speedo cable.

I agree - it looks like a piece of the wire retainer that's captured by the intake boot screws, used to keep the clutch cable in place as it threads between the carbs...

It's neither. those are much to thick and are accounted for.

I greatly doubt that. that spring is quite thick, and large.

I think you're onto something there! it looks about the same size and diameter.
I'll investigate further tomorrow.

Glad you found the problem. What is the diameter of the wire and what's the total length of the piece? The spring wire clamp for the breather sounds like a good guess but the wire diameter is pretty small - hard to tell from the photo if that could be the right size.

I can say with some confidence, that I think its some kind of retainer for a cable or tube. I did forget the breather hose pieces, but that is entirely possible.

Glad you found the problem.

Ed, it sure was a bugger to find and retrieve. I looked at every link and was looking at the teeth on the crank for damage when I found it. I had to pull the head for a third time and use a magnet to get it out.
