    valve stem tolarence???

I need some help on the valve stem tolerance for a 81 GS1100.

I am installing new valve seals and I cant find on here or in the manual what or how much play you can have on the valve stem itself in the valve guide

.005" is pushing it in my opinion, but most likely will be okay in the real world.

Some of the factory service manuals list what I think is a ridicules amount of clearance within the "service limit".

According to that photo above the exhaust OE clearance is .0026" max., but the service limit is .014" - more than 5x as much? I don't think so.

The GS1000 and GS850 manuals list the service limit for the exhaust valve to guide clearance at .0039", but I've seen some GS550 and GS750 manuals listing .014" too so I think there might be some typos in the service manuals.

In my opinion, the .0039" service limit makes sense considering the OE clearance. That's just me though. Do what you think is right.

5 thou is no problem. It will probably go at least 40,000 more miles that way. Ray.
