    Did I put my clutch together wrong?...

    So I took the clutch out to inspect it and to replace a leaky shift shaft seal. The clutch and everything worked great before I took it apart. I measured the plates and springs and everything is in spec.

    I put it back together and right away had to adjust the cable almost to its max before it would disengaged the clutch.... I did leave the clutch cover off and when I pulled in the clutch the pressure plate did push out and the clutch plates had no pressure on them as I was able to move them with my finger. When I released the clutch the pressure plate went back in and put pressure back on the plates.

    I Assembled everything and now the clutch wont disengaged. I took it for a ride and let it get very warm and still nothing. I tried putting the bike in a high gear and rocking it back and forth.. nothing.

    Could it be that I put the steel plates in wrong? Does the smooth side face out or in? If they are in the wrong way would it have these symptoms?

      I am not sure about the 550, does your bike have the plastic worm gear with the set screw in the clutch cover?
      It may require setting, set the cable back to a turn or two from monimum setting then set the worm gear that pushes on the clutch/rod first.
      Loosen the lock nut, screw the screw in until it just, just touches the rod, lock the locknut.
      Do final adjustment on the cable to give a few milimeters slack at the lever.

          It does have the plastic worm gear get but I dont think that is it. Everything worked perfect before I took it the clutch out and I never touched the plastic worm gear while it was apart. That combine with the fact that the pressure plate is moving out and releasing pressure on the plates... it just doesnt make sense...

              run in till touches then back it out a turn..then lock nut down.
              the screw can not touch or near touch or your clutch may slip.

                  I rode it again for 20 minutes with the clutch pulled in the entire time and it finally disengaged. so it was the plates sticking after all!

                      Yes they are just starting to notch, but not to bad. You can just feel it with your fingers so I am hoping it will get me awhile longer.
