Is the Dyna S now called the Dyna 2000? Thats all I could find on the site... Also it says its for a 78-81. I have a 82'Under the side cover... usually the left side cover. It's a black box with at least two wires heading for the signal generator on the right side of the crank....
Check a parts fiche at partshark or bikebandit or similar... you'll see it.
The easiest fix for that is to fit a Dyna S ignition. www.z1enterprises.com is a good place to get one...Comment

If you need it you can get the DS3-2 (an eBay seller, ATV Galaxy, sells them for ~$117 shipped). I know it says 78-81, but it will work on a GS550LZ. Trust me. See my sig
Some 82 models have electronic advance and require the Dyna 2000. The GS550 isn't one of them (until 83).

Coils yes are compatible, ignitor no. The ignitor is replaced by the Dyna S, which wires right to the coils. The ignitor is built-in to the sig gen, so to speak.
I did use the left-over ignitor harness to grab the switched +12V for the coil relay mod, though

I was wondering how it worked, now it makes sense. Thanks Mike. I am going to follow your lead and get the Dyna S and do the coil mod. I plan on having the bike awhile so it will be worth the money.Comment

If you think that will help. ATV Galaxy just re-posted on ebay but it's up about $5. Still the best price around methinks. My old ignitor would work great until it got hot. Sounds familiar.
One mod you will have to make if you install the DS3-2; the included spacer is too thick. This seems to be true of a lot of DS installations on the EI bikes. The included rotor is too short and can slip off the mechanical advance, so they include a spacer. But the spacer is too thick and when you tighten down the crank bolt the rotor can't advance. I sanded down the top of my rotor about 0.6mm. You could also try finding a thinner washer as a spacer. Just so it can turn freely and not lift off the mechanical advance.Comment
