Coming out of gear, under hard acceleration?

Okay guys, im riding a long and usually under Hard Acceleration or Above 5k, I completely loose my gear! Then it quickly comes back!
It will usually do this several times, very quickly.....then it's back to normal.


The catch is....I don't ever recall seeing my 5th gear indicator light flicker or go out.

I was riding today, about 60mph and climbing quickly, next thing I know...my Tach ****in Redlines! It was EXTREMELY fast, way quicker than my reaction time....Right as I let Off the Gas, it quickly returned to normal....

It doesn't really matter what gear I'm in......sometimes it will "buck" or "kick" at a Crawl.....but usually it does it when I'm gunning the throttle hard.




If I can recall correctly...I remember seeing someone here with a similar problem?

Classic problem on the 650's, worse than the other models, don't know why. Shift dogs wear and become tapered the wrong way, making them prone to slipping out under stress. Cheapest solution is to try to get all transmission parts from a messed up donor bike with low miles, maybe a wreck or a blown motor. I tried swapping gears once and it pushed the "pop" point from 5k to 8k, I'm guessing the swap had the problem too. Now I have a lower miles motor with no issues. The other option is to get the dogs on the gears back cut, which will cost machine time but be a guaranteed fix. Either way involves pulling the motor, splitting the cases and transmission work. You don't have to disassemble the engine, but if there is a reason to might as well do that since you pulled the motor anyways.

Wish I had better news. There are other possibilities, and others can elaborate on these, but the dogs is my guess.

Happens to me sometimes too, split second. I don't loose gear, though, I jump from 4 to 3 or 3 to 2. Just for a half a second max at higher revs and back. Pulls all the while, but not at the effect I'd like. This is usually when I overtake real quick or something, so not always welcome...

Sometimes if if is in a high gear it could just be you didn't catch the gear 100% this happens occasionally and is no big deal. It shouldn't happen every time though.

I got another GS 550 sitting in the garage, motor pulled.

I really can't afford to have another one down.


Guess I'm going to find another bike to ride for the summer, while I fix the stupid 650

Could it just be clutch slip? Have you ever changed the clutch springs?

I was under the notion, that if the bike Won't roll in 1st, with the Key Off, that you're clutch springs are good?

I guess it's possible the springs could be bad.....I JUST changed the oil though!!! Grrrr

I dunno, someone could correct if I'm wrong (which is more than possible). But to me usually slippage is more pronounced in higher gears: the motor has less leverage over the intertia of the bike. On most GS models you don't have to drain the oil to do the clutch springs - just put it on the side stand. I didn't on my 550 and have seen several owners of various displacements say the same.

I was just going to suggest clutch problems. Maybe a stuck cable or operating arm even. Could be clutch springs, how many miles on the bike? My 850 still hasn't needed springs or fibers and it's got 93k mi. I did have a slipping clutch once and it was due to misadjusted clutch cable after i worked on the bike.

I'm also suspecting the Clutch Cable.....
(i've had problems with adjusting it before....but never had THESE symptoms)

For instance, when I go to start the bike, you must squeeze the Handle in all the way, then let OUT around 1", otherwise the bike won't start.

When I shift slowly and hear the solid "click" noise....it never pops out.
It seems to only do it when I'm Screaming the motor, it seems to engage half-ass or something.....it just feels a little different.



I KNOW someone beat the hell out of this bike before.....so who knows, maybe I got a beat up tranny!

This is probably just the starter interlock switch at play.

So there are two different diagnosis being offered here: slipping out of gear due to a transmission problem, or clutch slippage.

A slipping clutch is the lesser problem: basically the engine revs will increase but there won't be any noise other than an engine speed increase and once you let off the throttle the clutch will hook up again. This condition can be replicated by doing throttle roll-ons in the middle gears.

A transmission that won't stay in gear is a more abrupt problem. This typically occurs after an upshift under full throttle. After you let off the gas the transmission may engage once more but there is typically a grinding noise as the engagement dogs slip back together. Very different problem than the slipping clutch, and much more difficult to repair.

Im definitely NOT getting any grinding....it just feels like it's slipping very fast, then back to normal.

I just installed a new clutch cable and throttle cable over the winter.
Haven't had much time to play with them....just hooked 'em up, and the bike rode....

I'm going to re-route my cable, I didn't exactly route it properly over the winter.
