    '82 1100E Clutch Fibre Plates....

Planning on installing new drive plates in a couple weeks, and wondered if OEM Suzuki plates, or aftermarket was the way to go (Barnett/EBC). Have the original factory 1982 plates in the bike right now. Installed new springs (OEM) last year which took care of some high rpm slip (had measured plate thickness with a mic, and found them well within spec)..... till last week, when it slipped momentarily when I clicked off a downshift, coupled with throttle, to pass a bunch of cars. Rotella-T 15W-40 oil, changed earlier that same day. Properly adjusted clutch cable.
Looking on ebay, I'm seeing many clutch plate sets labeled '82/'83 1100E'.....doesn't the '83 have thinner plates, in order to accommodate an extra drive plate?
Here's an example....input on these EBC kevlar plates would be appreciated too, if anyone here has tried them.

Youre correct in that the Driven plates for the '83 model year are thinner. I would chalk it up to a typo on the part of the seller. And as a result they have a tendancy to chew up the clutch basket.

I too am interested in other riders feedback regarding aftermarket friction plates.

EBC uses aluminum for the plates, which is what you want. Not really sold on the Kevlar lining. Personal experiance showed me that the kevlar is more suseptable to being grabby as the lever is releases. To me the organic lining give a better "feel" as the clutch is engaged. If it's a race bike it's not a problem but in real world traffic it can be another issue to deal with. Just my opinion....Jack

The guy who originally built my engine and supports many drag racers only recommends the stock Suzuki components. Maybe Try PartShark for pricing.

I have a FBG set. My clutch hub is notched from a previous Barnett kit so my clutch is a little grabby. I think if the hub wasn't notched the FBG would work pretty good.

I did just get some EBC kevlar brake pads that seem pretty good.

Fast By Gast is the ONLY way to go for fibers for a 16 valve 1100 or 1150. They are 9 dollars each & you can't get a better plate. PERIOD!!! Their # is 800-866-3880. Ray

Thanks for all the input, guys. I was leaning towards OEM, but would like to give FBG a try. I'm constantly amazed at Suzuki quality....they & their suppliers obviously used high quality materials, going by the wear rate of components on these bikes. Even the clutch cable on the bike is still the factory one, at 30K and almost 3 decades later (I'll be replacing it with a new OEM, just to be safe).
Yesterday, some hapless Yuppie in a G-35 decided to challenge, off the lights. I usually don't humour them, because the legal ramifications are now a huge PITA with the new laws, but since this stretch appeared pork-free, (and the guy a showoff douche), I let it rip....bike hooked up perfectly, wheel caught some air shifting 1st to 2nd, and then went to redline without any slip at all. Embarrassed Infinity guy didn't even glance over, when he pulled alongside at the next light.

I believe Bob (Baatfam) dragged race with FBG plates and mentioned they get a bit grabby when hot but in drag racing that may be a good thing....

Yes, correct. I used the FBG plates in my drag bike and they worked well there...that was a slider clutch, BTW...

I did try them in my street bike once, but when they got hot, they were very "grabbie"...didn't like them at all in the street bike.
Went back to OEM and I am very happy...

I may be putting these clutch plates up for sale. Suzuki OEM for my '82 GS1100E. I won these off of E-bay as my clutch was malfuntioning, shutter. But I richened up the air screws on no 2 & 3 cylinders and my clutch worked good. I couldn't believe it. Before I give these up I want to ride the bike again and make sure it wasn't a fluke.

Okay, if you do decide to put them up, I'll buy them. Lemme know what you find.

Yup, it's amusing....these jokers don't realize that only a handful of supercars are capable of accelerating with a 30 year old litre bike, and they are all well over the $200,000 mark. I must say the Infinity exhaust sounds very nice, driven hard like that though.....hope he appreciated the howl of my uncorked stainless Supertrapp at full cry too.

I use the Fast By Gast plates in my street bikes & have never had problems so I can't compare with Bob's issues with them. Ray.
