What will fit in a 81 gs 850
I have a 81 850 shaft drive basket case. That needs new piston rings and who knows what else. I would like to put a running 750 0r 1100 in, so I can buy parts easier and not sink a lot of money into a engine that may not run. Does anyone know where I can find information on what would work without modifying (i.e. electrical, engine mounts)?Tags: None -

The 850s are awesome engines.
I'd get another one of those if you can.
They do make 1100 shafties and I'm sure you could find a way to squeeze it into the frame.
The 750s were all chain drive to my knowledge. -

If you don't want to fix the 850 ? Look for a GS1000G or GS1100G Motor. Pretty much a bolt in.. 750 is chain drive unless you have a Japan version GS750 Made one year and very rareComment

Thanks for the help guys I like the 850 but with the rarity of the parts and not knowing what I might have(don't want to do a whole engine rebuild). I think i will try to find a 1000 or 1100Comment

Greetings and Salutations!!
Hi Mr. ourfootprints,
Parts for the 850 are not rare. I've been able to find everything I need for my bike. You'll have to use Ebay and the Parts Wanted and Parts for Sale sections here in the forum. Most parts, minus body parts and larger engine pieces, are still available OEM. To get you started, let me point you in the right direction, dump a TON if information on you, and share some GS lovin'.
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
