Oil leak from front "hump"?

    Oil leak from front "hump"?

    I have a stubborn oil leak that has reappeared after a "freshening up" of my engine. Oil accumulates at the "hump" at the front of th engine, dead centre, just below the exhaust.

    I've cleaned up all the easy stuff (oil pressure switch, cam chain tensioner, etc) and was pretty sure this might be something more involved, such as the cylinder gasket. I searched the forums for about an hour last night and stumbled on a post about a couple of o-rings that were accessible when the valve cover was removed. I hoped to compare notes this morning, since that post was about a slightly different engine (E maybe?)

    ...it looks like the comparable part would be #15...and I'm thinking there are no easy fixes on my engine as compared to the o-rings that were replaceable on some of the other machines.

    Any thoughts?

          Ya, that's where my disappointment lies at the moment. If I could find the post that got me started on this wild goose chase, I could show you what I was originally looking for. It looked like a washer in the other schematic too but there was apparently an o-ring that could be replaced...

                  Oil is a devious thing. It often looks like it is coming from a given spot when its true origin is another.

                  If you can clean the area and get rid of the oil you can better know what the source is.

                  clean it, dry it, and use some talc or other dry powder as a method of checking.
                  If oil spread out form the washer its one thing if oil is seeping down from another you will be able to tell.

                      I went through the same thing. I think mine was leaking from more than one palce. Try the two front head bolt first. Replace the rubber o-ring on them. clean everything up and make sure you get a good seal on the valve cover without breaking anything. Pay close attention to the area above the middle head bolt where oil builds up. There are two "drain areas" where oil can come down from the valve cover into the spark plug well, then down the front of the head onto the middle head bolt. Clean that area good so you can see new flows. Then watch for leaks.

                      I ended up replacing my head gasket, it's now oil tight. But what a pain in the arse it is and still not running 100% due to my lack of experiance. But i'll get it right.

                          Sunburn, you're on an E model, right? As far as I can tell, there are no o-rings for me to chase down on the GL as there are on the E. It's got to be the head gasket - unless anyone wants to give me a little more hope here?

                              Still, clean it up real good and run it again to eliminate the valve cover, valve cover bolts, tach connection, Crank case vent.

                              Then order your head , valve, cam tensor gasket and the fun begins.
