Overboring... thats a question not a statement.

    Hello there global GSers
Checking through the workshop manuals for the GS550, 750 and 850 I notice that the Piston Pin Diameter, Pin Bore and Small End Bore are the same i.e.

    Pin Diameter 15.995-16.000
    Pin Bore 16.002-16.006
    Small End Bore 16.006-16.014

I know that the 850 top end fits onto the 750 bottom end, and believe the 750 shares crank case castings with the 550, so surely it is possible to fit 850 pistons into O/B 550 barrels?

I read on this site that it is not possible to put a 750 top end on the 550. Why is this? If the castings are the same then I assume the oil feeds line up. Is the problem just the shorter stroke of the 550?

BobbyBill, the castings for the 550 and 750 crankcases are different. You cannot put the 750 or 850 top end on the 550 crankcases. The through studs are different. The cylinders and head will not physically line up with the 550 crankcase studs. And there is not enough meat in the 550 barrels to take the 850 pistons. Sorry to disappoint you.

Ok cheers mate, much appreciated. Just checking them details. But I'm right is saying that the 750 and 850 components are interchangable right?

I see you did a 700 coversion on your 550. What engine set up did you use there?

Yes the 850 pistons, cylinder and head will fit on the 750 cases.

I used 650 cylinders bored 1mm over with 650 head and 32mm CV carbs.
