    Play in transmission???

Good day eh. I have a 79 gs750E that runs like a champ. It has 40,000 miles on it. When on the centre stand and in gear
, I can rotate the back tire about 2" back and forth in 1st, 3" in 2nd and 3rd and less in 4th and 5th. Is my trans on the way out or is it normal wear? How much is too much? It shifts great and is not noisy other than a little whine. It has a fresh chain and sprockets this year.

If "it shifts great and is not noisy", I'd be real happy at 40k!

That play is normal, not wear related. Without some play between the engagement dogs in the transmission it wouldn't shift.

Sounds about normal to me. A little whine is ok to - some bikes do, some don't. Tough gearboxes on these bikes so no need to worry.
