Hi. Been having trouble getting out of first gear since I changed my oil yesterday. It never happened before. This morning the same thing. Once I get through the gears it's fine the rest of the ride. It only happens after the bike has been sitting a while and gets cold. I used Valvoline 10w40 "motorcycle specific" oil. Should I have used something else? Or could it be coincidence and nothing to do with the oil change. Thanks. 81 GS550L

Seems like more than a coincidence if it happened right after the oil change. Hard to believe a fresh change with a motorcycle specific oil would lead to hard shifting. If you do decide to live with it, I would try a different oil next change just to see if it improves. Shell Rotella diesel oil is a favorite around here.

How much free play do you have in your clutch cable? Might need to be tightened some.Ed

Messed around with it today. Readjusted the clutch cable. The engine side cable adjustment was off quite a bit. Guess it was coincidence after all. Shifts great now. Thanks for the suggestion.Comment
