Looks bone dry. No lubricant.

Honda Moly lube is the stuff for the splines. It has more Moly than any other commonly available grease and is developed specific to the needs of these drive splines. Less than $10 at Honda dealers.

Back to splines, the old style "black" splines are reputed to be the most durable. The "gold" splines, of which this failed one was (even though it doesn't look gold in the photo), were way too soft and fail with regularity. At some point Suzuki upgraded their manufacturing process and created what is referred as the "silver" spline. These are reputed to be good, but someone here recently posted photos of a worn out silver spline so by default the black wins (my view anyway).

I've never heard of one failing at under 6000 miles. I replaced one it around 35000 on an 1100G.

You never know.

That is excellent news. Were you able to procure a tube of Honda Moly 60 paste? That's the stuff you want to use on the drive splines. Any other regular axle grease will break down under that heat and pressure.

Not yet I used some synthetic bearing grease. I forgot about it until I was putting it together last night at 10:00. I'm going Monday to by some.

Last time I did mine I used some molly grease from Polaris for U joints and such
