I believe it was only the 8-valve 750s that got the shaft, and they did not make it to '81, so it's rather safe to assume that he has a chain-driven 750.
The question remains as to whether it's an E or an L, but for engine work, it does not matter.

The carbs have been completely torn down and dipped overnight in a can of berrymans and have had the new o. Rings from cycle orings installed. As per the pdf of how to clean and adjust the carbs. And ill try to get a picture up as soon as I canComment

Cool, I'm betting it's either valves or air leaks.
We get a LOT of folks on here that do a half ass job with the carbs and claim that they're cleaned "real good" which is why we ask. Thanks for clarifying.Comment

....and to be clear.....I hear "whooshing" sounds on my 750 too.
........usually between about 85 and 100 mph.......

Did you install a jet kit when you switched over to the pod filters? also the air wooshing sound you are talking about may be the sound of air being sucked in through the pod filters. You WILL need a jet kit with those filters. Oh and your bike is an E modelComment

No idea on what jets you'll need, but you're using much, much more air than if you had the stock setup. These bikes are very particular on the air/fuel mixture.
You're bike looks like a mix to me because of the leading front forks. Perhaps it had a front end accident at some point...
Do you still have that air filter box that's laying on the floor in those pics ?? If so, I'd be interested in purchasing it from you.
