Engine removal GS1000E

Iremoved all engine mounts, carbs and air box.
But cannot get the engine out of the cradle, as if there is not enough room.

Is there a way around this, or do you have to dismantle the engine before removal?

Any help appreciatted.

Big d83 and myself recently removed the engine from his 650. Took us about 3 hr.s. We finally ended up putting the frame on its side and lifting the frame off. Even then we couldn't figure out what we did right. It honestly doesn't look like there is enough room. So when it came to putting it back in, we earmarked lots of time. First we tried to remove the oil pan, but it wasn't coming off. So we decided to just try to put it in as is. Big d83 had gotten some steel rod, courtesy of another forum members advice. Less than a minute later the engine was back in, much to our surprise. I suspect if we had used this method for removal, it would have come out smoothly.

On the 1100E, the motor comes out on the right side only and you really need to remove the breather cover on top of the valve cover...
I don't know if the 1000 is the same, but I suspect so.

You don't have to remove the cam cover on a 78 1000E to remove the engine. It comes out on the right side as well.

Personally I use the Chuck Hahn method... Hey Chuck, can you stop on over and pull this this engine out for me!

I did lay the bike down on its side, but it catching in all different places.
Just could not shift it, plus I was doing this on my own, so probably not enough hands.

She'll come out as long as you have all the engine mounts removed. I think you need an extra set of hands to make it easier to move it around in the frame.

Remove all the engine mount brackets and bolts. You need to lift the engine slightly before it will slide out the right side. If you are laying the bike over, lay it over on the RH side then lift the frame off. My back is pretty gimpy but I managed. So can you. Don't give up.

It's easier if you remove the breather and valve cover (cam cover), just give you a bit more wiggle room. You'll just wiggle the block a bit and wiggle the frame around a bit and it will come out. You don't need two people to do it when it's on it's side, sure it helps, but one guy can do it easy enough. Ed had the good point of lifting the frame off the engine, not the engine off the frame since it's laying on it's side. You'll figure it out.

Remove engine mounts, lift engine so oil pan clears frame, remove engine out right side.

Breather stays on. You may want to remove the ignition coils.

Try the breather cover first, then the cam cover if necessary. Coils would be last. Shouldn't be necessary.

IIRC, the coils kind of got in the way.
