hey guys, I had a previous post going about my starter which i figured out and Im onto the next problem... my starter clutch was just spinning and not starting the bike and now I have it off, what am I looking for? as I dont see anything that is wrong right away...this is on my '85 1150

The starter clutch is the thing in your hand. It's bolted to the charging rotor. Make sure the throw-out springs and pushers are all there and haven't punched through the thin metal housing and that the rollers move freely. Also make sure that none of the three bolts are sheared in two. Then, make sure the primary gear (the big one in the pic) mesh with the starter gear correctly. Also, it's hard to tell in your pic but are there teeth missing from the primary gear??

Was the rotor loose on the crankshaft? How hard was it to remove?

rotor not loose, it was really hard to pull off, I made a puller and the weld broke so I had to make a bigger weld, and even that was cracking when it came off

Rodger that. I couldn't tell the condition of the rotors taper from your picture.

Nope...not rocket science. It's a simple overrunning clutch. Holds one way free wheels the other.

Replace the round dowels. They are not catching the OD idle gear.

ok talked to Terry last nite and starter clutch looks fine, got it back on and tightened up, hit starter button this morning and there is noise but engine is not turning over, Im thinking my starter is toast....
anyone have a good used one to sell? it needs to be a 10 tooth spline for the 1150 -

Sorry you went through the process of taking off a starter clutch on a big end crank without checking the starter first.
I've seen rotors welded on those big end cranks. You got lucky you even broke it loose.

you can remove the stator cover and have a helper hold the idler gear from moving with a screw driver(against the side as not to slide over) and see whats happening or whats not happening.
give me a call if you want and let me listen to it while you hit the button before taking it apart again.
also if you can't find a nice starter for cheap...i have the one we discussed if it does turn out to be your starter.

in my other post I believe I found the problem with my starter, and so I moved onto the starter clutch, I will pop the cover back have and have a look again, will have my fingers crossed!
