    Slips out of 2nd into 1st?

    Hi guys, I can't believe this place exists!.... and I need help.....

    I bought a 77 GS750 about a month ago, got a new battery, changed the oil, plugs, points, tightened/oiled chain, etc...... The usual stuff. It fires up great, but I still haven't been on it. I plan on taking it out Memorial day weekend.

    My questions are:
    1. Is there anything thing else I need to check that is out of the ordinary?
    2. I got this from a friend that got it and let it sit, it was last used as a daily driver in 2010 and he got it from a guy to settle a debt. In talking to another friends brother, he informed me that the guy stopped useing it daily because it would drop out of 2nd into 1st and he didn't want to get thrown..... Not something I want to do myself. Is this common? What could be the cause? Fix?

      ride it before trying to fix a problem that you may not have.

          When the transmission wears out it'll slip out of gear but usually second will slip into neutral.
          I wouldn't make this diagnosis until you've ridden it.

              I had a bike handed to me that I was told "slipped" out of gear and it was just the clutch slipping because improper oil with friction modifiers had been used and the clutch was slipping when you really pinned the throttle.
              If it truly is slipping then I'd suspect a bent/worn shifting fork but my advice is the same: ride it to find out or if you don't feel comfortable, let someone with a fair amount of experience handling a bike ride it to diagnose.
              I'm in Portland, bring it on by.

                  Sounds like a plan, hopefully what I've already done fixed it or they were just misinformed to begin with.

                      Where in MI?? theres a good many members in my old home state. Bet one would come by for introductions and a few frosty beers.

                      I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

                          I bet the guy was wearing huge army boots or something, stepping the shift lever accidentally.

                          It's no big deal to avoid second gear if need be.

                              sounds highly improbable for it to jump from 2nd to 1st. as stated, if anyting is worn it would jump back to neutral. sounds like you need to do an oil flush and change, maybe check the clutch out if its a bit dodgy.
                              also check the drive chain is properly adjusted and well lubricated.
                              take it for a gentle ride and see what happens
