My 80 850G had very few issues until I changed the clutch cable.
While I had no problems, I was planning for that 4 day trip and decided to replace the cable as a preventative measure. Ordered and installed a Motion Pro cable. WOW - what a hassle from then on. If I adjusted the clutch to be good when cold, it wouldn't release when hot. Adjusted it hot, it slipped when cold. Many many adjustments, off-setting the spline as described, many more adjustments and never could get it right.
Since all the problems started when I put the Motion Pro cable on, I pulled off it off, ordered and installed a Suzuki cable. MUCH better, but it still took a lot of fiddling to find that 'sweet' spot again. Seems that as little as a quarter-turn on the adjustment nut at the engine end makes a difference.
