Squeal when warm (> 40 mins riding)

My '82 GS1100G makes a squealing sound (sounds like it's from the top end?) once she's good and warm - usually after ~ 40 minutes riding.

My plan is to ride her for an hour or so before taking her to the mechanic on Thursday, so they don't have to ride her around to repro it.

But I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before? It doesn't seem to impact performance, smoothness, starting etc. etc. but it's got me bothered because I can't explain it.

Most likely the tachometer or speedometer needs to be lubricated.

Unscrew the cable to test this.

The speedo's the candidate then; the tacho cable has already failed completely and been removed, pending a replacement :-)

Nope, but thanks, I'll go have a look. Still taking her to the mechanic though ... they had the valve covers off recently and decided to try re-using the existing (reasonably new) gasket. Bad plan She's currently as oil-tight as the Exxon Valdez.

You really need to do this stuff yourself, shops are bad news.

Agree with TKent here. Doing the work yourself will save you loads of money and heartache and it's not that hard.
