That's one way. Another is to check the valve clearances; if the clearance is big that means the valve is not seating.

Or you could do a leak down test on it.

Well I think everything is going much better. I am now checking the valve clearance. I want to make sure I am using the right measurement for the clearance can you tell me what is the right spec for 1981 gs550l? I am not trusting what I read in the manuals since I got the timing wrong.

                        I got it started

The bike started up Yay!! I checked the compression and it is at about 105. Kinda low. My battery was running low so I have to charge it and check it again. All the cylinders read very close to the same reading

The manual is fine, only you have to use the right one! Proper spec is .03mm - .08mm. Use the service manual guide on how to position the cams when judging clearance. Don't just point the lobe away from the bucket, position the cams per the manuals instruction.

Oh, and since you have new rings it's advised to take the bike out and ride it aggressively. Don't baby it. The rings need pressure into the cylinder walls in order to seat properly. No need for a top speed run or anything, just ride it around town good and aggressively and use lots of throttle
