First rebuild... any how to's or do's and don'ts?

I'm still in the process of my rebuild of a 1983 GS850 (my first bike) you can find my thread here: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=187217

Anyway I've never rebuilt a motor before and I'm finding it hard to find some basic info on what I should and shouldn't do. I do have the help of some friends but I'd really like some sort of a step by step guide.

Any links you could help me out with?

    Thanks!

    Carl

Most of what you need will probably be here

but the more specific questions you have, the easier it will be to give you an answer..

        specifics:

Gatekeeper: I guess one of the main things is that I've got a OEM gasket kit as recommended from others here but do they just go right on after I've cleaned the parts or do I need a kind of compound or something to help seal them in and bond with the engine parts?

        Merc: Thanks for the input...

You shouldn't need any adhesive or other goop to seal the gaskets. Some folks use some grease or even anti-seize to keep the gasket in place while re-installing the covers or other mating parts.

Resist temptation to remove old cylinder base gasket with angle grinder or explosives. It'll be rough but you can do it!
