    Final Gear

Is The nut on the end of a gs850 final gear reverse thread. And is it possible for the bike to run and ride ok if this gear is completely cracked in two or is the dealer making excuses because he turned it the wrong way

Do you mean the nut on the output flange at the back of the motor?

BTW, a dealer is not more qualified to work on a GS than you are. Unless you have been very lucky to find a qualified mechanic, which it appears you have not.

Secondary drive assy (end of trans), or final drive 'gear' (rear end)??? The final drive gear doesn't have a nut on the end, it has a nut on the front.

You're a bit unclear as to what you are referring to.

I don't know for sure if the nut is or isn't left hand threaded, although I doubt it is anything other than a normal right hand thread.

What was the reason for having you're final drive assembly looked at?

A noise, leaking fluid, ect. ?

It may be better and cheaper to just swap the whole final drive with a unit off ebay. Mechanic labor is kinda pricey and I know there isnt a left hand threaded nut on the 1100

Swapping the whole final drive from ebay is what i ended up with thank you to all! It was leaking from the boot and i thought it was seals. Turned out the Final Gear was completely Sheared off where the nut threaded on which was causing movement and things to leak I was suprised the bike would still move but apparently the gears were still able to mesh. I was checking to make sure the dealer wasnt feeding me a line but i came to the conclusion that it was still possible for it to run. Anyone else have experience with the shaft of this gear shearing off and can anyone tell me why??
