what is the stock front sprocket size chain size and rear sprocket size for a 1997 gs1000
i bought a 42 tooth 530 rear sprocket i needed a 520 rear sprocket!
what size and what chain lengths do y'all use for a bike like this
what do y'all recommend to use as the most fun for street riding and still having a lot of high speed fun

Personally, I want to see the 1987 GS1000.


On the chance that there was still some fat-fingering of the "letters", I looked up specs for a 1978 GS1000.

They had a 15-tooth front sprocket, a 42-tooth rear sprocket and a 630 chain, but I have no idea how many links.

If you have converted to a 530 or 520 chain and sprocket, those numbers are all wrong for you.

To maintain the same ratio, the sprockets need to be 18/50 or 18/51 and the chain needs to have more links.

can you explain why the larger gears would revert the bike to stock?

They are not actually larger gears. It's all in the numbering.

A 630 chain tells you that it is 6/8 of an inch from pin to pin and 3.0/8 of an inch from side to side.

A 530 chain tells you that it is 5/8 of an inch from pin to pin and 3.0/8 of an inch from side to side.

A 520 chain tells you that it is 5/8 of an inch from pin to pin and 2.0/8 of an inch from side to side.

Because the pin-to-pin distance is smaller, there will be more teeth around the edge of a same-diameter sprocket.

Because the pin-to-pin distance is smaller, it will take more links to make a chain that is the same overall length.

If you simply use the same number of teeth when you convert to a 530, the sprockets will be a smaller diameter, and your chain will likely rub along the swingarm.
