That rattling sound the springs made as you rotated them - does that sound like the noise in your engine?

Those loose springs could be it. If it's not they still need fixin.
This could be a fix for you.

By the way, very nice bike!

Here Guys, I have just taken the clutch apart and removed the basket here is a short video of the backing plate and springs, presumably you should not be able to rotate the springs Clutch video . When I reassemble the clutch how do you guys stop the centre nut coming loose do you use thread lock

You're right - those springs are sloppy and they'll make a noise. Here's one way to fix it:

There's a thread on here somwhere where somebody twisted the springs 'longer' with a screwdriver and that worked as well.

Oh - and there's a tab washer you bend over to make sure that nut doesn't come undone.

I'm not sure what you would use on the nut, hopefully others will chime in,
but here's the nut you should use.

                And the linK for it.

If you want to permanently fix the problem, send the clutch basket to GRC (http://www.grccranks.com/ to have a Falicon heavy duty clutch kit installed. That + the heavy duty clutch hub nut from APE and you'll never have a rattling GS1000 clutch again.

That's to be a brilliant job done on the clutch, the only problem is I am in the UK and the postage would be an absolute killer. I will check out to see if there is anybody in this country to do the mods but to be honest there are not alot of options. Just another question I checked out the flying banana link and it mentions tig welding the rivets on reassembly would mig welding be sufficient as I know someone who mig welds.

I found the link - one by Tom back in 2008. Halfway down page 2. Worth asking whether what he did is still holding up:

Just an update have located a suzuki tuning shop in the UK and have sent the GS1000 clutch basket away to have the heavy duty Falicon billet backing plate and heavy duty springs and rivets fitted. Now need to locate somewhere that sells the APE heavy duty nut and washer, clutch cover gasket and generator cover gasket if anyone could help please.
