strange little pin at back of oil pump driven gear

Hey all. My first time pulling apart a clutch basket really. 80' 1000G. It had slippage when pulling hard above 7000 rpm, clutch basket springs need replacing. Everything came apart simple enough but of course a bolt snapped going back in and none of them would torque to the proper amount. So....went to my spare engine and with a lot of effort got the basket out. Ok, now I'm ready to put everything back in but I'm not understanding why there is a little pin in one of the notches at the back of the oil pump driven gear. How can the primary gear fit into those notches with the pin there? help me understand. You can see it in the upper notch in the picture, thanks the member who took this picture.

It's a rubber piece for dampening.

Is it essential? putting things back together the very tip of it broke off
