85 GS1150 Oil Leak
New to this forum. I've done some searching on this subject but perhaps not doing it correctly. My GS1150 has 20k miles on it and has started to leak pretty badly on the right side (oil soaked pant leg and a free boot shine). It's been difficult to identify the leak source, I suspect the base gasket or the cam chain tensioner gasket since the leaking oil is low on the cylinder wall and not up by the cyl head.. From this forum I see where I can use a foot powder spray on a clean engine to locate the leak source. I will try that. Today I also found a service manual that specifies retorquing the cyl head nuts every 3k miles. Well, that's not been done. Over the winter I replaced the head cover gasket and the head cover bolt seals. No leakage there. Any thoughts on next steps? Will a retorque buy me anything? If I have to replace the base gasket I assume that I have to remove the engine? Thanks.Tags: None -
This may sound really silly, but I had a bad o ring on my oil cap that was seeping down the clutch cover till I found what was leaking. May as well start with the easy items...sigpic

85 GS1150 Oil Leak
Oil filler cap oring is fine. The oil is leaking from the front of the engine and being blown around the right side of the engine. So cam tensioner gasket is not the issue either.Comment

Also when you get a minute post some pictures......I get all excited when a fellow 1150 owner joins us

85 GS1150 Oil Leak
I found the oil leak. On the either side of the cylinder there's a threaded hole under the 3rd fin from the top. On the right side of the engine, oil is leaking from that hole. From the schematic it appears that this hole would be for the dowel pin for alignment with the cyl head. As a stop gap measure till winter down time, I wonder if I can plug the hole with silicone or something.Comment

Hi Everyone,
This is encouraging, I have just replaced the stator in my 1150EF and was "hoping" that the new cover gasket would have solved my nasty oil leak, it didn't. It is not apparent when just idling, but after 30 miles of riding it is getting back on my boot and all over the stator cover.
I will try stuffing a rolled up shop towel there tomorrow to try and confirm that it's the base gasket, but it is sure looking that way; maybe a supply of them will let me ride for the rest of the short season up here while I start to gather parts and prepare to do battle. (again)
Maybe this is why the previous owner bought another bike?
The problem for me with this type of job is knowing where to stop, rebuild head? carbs? new rings, probably a good idea with honed cylinders...
Oh well, at least I have the time being retired, just no where convenient to work, either on the driveway or the back of an old barn next door...
Thanks for the encouraging news that it can be done with the motor still in the frame.
