    won't go into first

On a 7 day trip in bc and yesterday I couldn't get the 1100 into first gear. All the other gears are fine, shifts normally. But when down shifting it will only go to neutral. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Will it shift into first with the engine off?

shifting linkage is wore out and needs adjusted a little...replaced ect..
either that or some d?bris may be under the shifter shaft(behind the clutch basket).

I can't see it being caused by the shifter mechanism as the bike will shift up and down through all the other gears.

My gut is it's internal. Possibly a bent/damaged shifter fork?

Dunno without touching and disassembling it.

the shifting pawl assembly lets it shift up and down through the gears and goes back to a central position but...
a worn shifter linkage can bind up when trying for 1st gear.

Is the throw length different for first gear than the other gears?

you have to get past neutral so it takes more throw....
i am just stating my experiences with 82/83 1100 16v. shifter mechanisms.

But once you're in neutral the throw should be about the same as the other gears. Don't get me wrong, I think what you are suggesting is the place to start looking into the problem.

Trever, does the bike feel like it's hitting a hard stop when trying to shift into first or does the travel feel like 'normally' ('ish) did?

the ball and socket is usually still good.
the problem is the back side where it is bradded? over get's loose.
you can tig weld them and make them new again but..
you usually loose the rubber boot from the heat.
mcintosh showed me this years ago and would weld these for me on many bikes...some stock and some with air shifters(bike would miss shifts from the slop).
