1150 oil flow

i would like to add that on several occasions when changing my oil on my 1150 street bike that was raced and beat to death on the street...
the oil filter would be separated from the metal cap and the paper was some what shredded in the filter cavity.
i was running 750 pump gears.
any thoughts?

I know my 1166 with hipo gears will easily peg a 15 psi pressure gauge (VDO mechanical) and if not careful it will starve the oil pan. So figure as much as 20 psi under hard acceleration not sure those filters are rated for that.

IIRC, the oil flow is from the outside of the filter inwards. If it was excess pressure/volume, then the filter should be crushed. That could cause separation of the paper from the cap as the filter imploded. Without seeing a picture of the shredded filter it is hard to say.

However, I believe the filters are all the same and my little motor puts our 70# pressure at high RPM so I'm stumped why the filter shredded.

with the the .340 cams (107/109) and RS carbs it liked around 10-10.5k shift points.
been many years but it may have only blew a part the frams and not the OEM filters.
can't remember..........

There is a relief valve on the end of the filter. If the pressure gets to high then it pushes the valve open and the oil bypasses the filter.

dar this has been years ago but i did shred several filters on my 2k mile 1150.
only me and my brother seen this...never mentioned it before to anyone.
so could it have been the fram filters if that's what i was using?
i used OEM and fram only.

When I worked as a service tech I saw the end cap separate from the filter a couple of times. Stock GS1000e models. Filters didn't look like OEM, probably Emgo.

i was changing the oil once a week at the time.
there are 3 tracks within an hour from me with tune and test on different days so...
plus i always ran 20-50 castrol GTX...just my thing.
well this is the 1st time sense the late 80's i thought about it.
no harm...no foul i guess.

The filter won't blow up (at least in my case it didn't), but it can pierce a small hole through the side. It may have been fluke deal where everything lined up just right, never found out for certain. When i removed the cooler it caused a high pressure jet that blew a tidy little hole through the filter.
That's how i got educated about the 2 different covers.
Swapped the cover and problem went away.

Makes sense, oil cooler gallery blocked off and everything going through that small hole in the 1150 cover. I will be changing the covers shortly, ive had the motor running a few times with the 1150 cover on and the ports blocked, i'll post a pic of the filter if its been damaged.

I'm in the same boat with an 1150 motor swap and no cooler.

It seems like there's thousands of oil coolers on ebay for sale, but very few GS1150 coolers available. I'm thinking of just buying a similar sized one from some other Suzuki and adapting it to fit. I have an assortment of parts on my bike, so keeping it authentic and matching is not critical. Any reason why I couldn't make a 95 GSX600 oil cooler do the same thing? Assuming I'd have to modify the hoses and their routing.

This one is $30 instead of $200 for a real 1150 cooler.
