Transmission drops out of 5th gear
Hey guys its finally getting warm here in Michigan and I want to do some work on the bike. Its a 1982 GS1100E that I bought last spring. The problem started out intermittently, every once in a while on the highway it would drop from 5th to 4th. Near the end of the season it got so bad as soon I let the clutch out it would drop immediately! Ive done some research and cant find anyone else with this problem, could it be as simple as worn shift forks, or something worse?Tags: None -
Not sure about your engine, whether selector forks can be replaced from the side, without a major stripdown. If you're lucky and they can and that's the problem, then that's fine.
On the other hand, worn dogs on the gear display exactly the same symptoms - doing it a bit, then more, then all the time. Replacing the gear is major stripdown.
For that, you can thank the clutchless-changer ***** of a previous owner.Dave

I hope thats it! I do have large feet, size 13 wide, how would that affect it?
Thanks for the pic Tom! How do I access that? Im guessing the adjustment procedure will be in my Haynes manual?Last edited by Guest; 03-23-2014, 05:55 PM.Comment

The shifter linkage is the part that goes from where you shift with your foot to the frame. it is right there so you don't have to take anything apart.Comment
