1979 850G just spit out a shim

Hey guys, I've been around a long time but don't post very much. Thought I'd share my story and ask a few questions.

Scored this 850 from a friend who pestered me into buying it, finally got it for $180!

So after all the regular tune up, o-rings, tires, clutch and many other things including two new used carb bodies due to broken idle mixture screws plugging the idle circuit, had it running excellent!

Then while having a great ride to the coast this Saturday, it didn't go into 5th gear and I opened the throttle fully while already at 9k rpm. Well it slowed way down and sounded terrible so I shut it down and brought it home with my truck. Found the #2 intake shim out and broken! I'll post more pics...

Here's my cam, does anyone know if there's a better cam option? My research shows the 1000 has the same cam as the 79' 850... at least I have a new bucket... I think the cam timing may be off now as well.

Wow... I wonder if it was because of a loose cam adjustment, a damaged cam lobe or an already cracked shim. Kind of a chicken and the egg thing. New cam, shim and bucket and you should be good to go.

That was a brand new shim, i had just set them.

loose adjustment and over rev can spit a shim.
the shim broke once it came loose IMO.

Where's the rest of the shim? Might want to Find it.

How much clearance are we talking to break one like that? Like .006"?

Did anyone else notice that the broken shim is not a Suzuki shim?

The smaller diameter Kawasaki shim maybe. Good eye.

I have a bunch of Kawi and Yami shims and they don't look like that either.
Perhaps it is an under bucket shim? Those, are much smaller in diameter.

i see an after market shim.
as mentioned kawi shims are smaller od and move in a gs bucket.

under bucket shims fit in the retainer...very small od.

Aaaaand that's what the red line is for. But hey for a $180 bike, I guess you can afford a top-end rebuild...

No it's not. Shouldn't spit a shim until way way past the red line. Otherwise I would have spit thousands of them. Shim was the wrong size, or the valve clearance was too loose. Maybe both.
