I'm positive no rings are upside down. The first time I put the engine together I did put the rings on #4 upside down, and also did not have the oil ring placed properly so I checked them all and have all rings and oil rings situated properly on the pistons. I replaced the Vesrah valve seals with OEM Suzuki seals. I pulled the plugs after the ride today and none of them have any signs of oil on them, before 2,3 & 4 had varying sings of oil on them. As for the rotor Todd, I didn't take it off but I did have to put a new bolt in there. I'll be pulling the starter cover and the stator cover I guess and having a look. For the valve seals being installed, yes I did use a socket to tap them into place. I'm not sure I follow you though Ed, what do you mean by "seems likely the problem is a valve stem seal...which should tell us the problem is an oil ring" Thanks for the ongoing help guys. I'm back to work for a couple of days but I might be able to have a look at things tomorrow night, if not it won't be till Tuesdays or so. It'll be good to get to the bottom of this.

Rob..if the starter spins the starter is OK. If its not cranking the engine, look at the starter clutch comming unbolted from the back of the rotor. Grab it and see if it rattles from side to side when you have the cover off. Rotate it too so you can see if its "trying" to grab the crank any. Remember it will only engage going the one way.

It sounds like you may have solved it.
But if it still smokes after sitting, you need to start checking for cracks. Or other leaks.

Success!! pulled of the stator cover and sure enough the crank bolt had loosened. Put it back in to torque with some lock tite, started her up and not a single puff of blue smoke Thank you baby Jesus. So the Z1 Vesrah valve seals were not good, big shock. First time I've had the issue of the crank bolt coming loose, thanks for the helping hands guys.

What would the rotor bolt being loose have to do with making it smoke???

I saw the post about the starter clutch not engaging...but his post referrred to fixing the bolt and no more smoke...which left me puzzled as to what a loose rotor bolt has to do with any smoke.

He didn't say that the loose bolt caused the smoking, just that he re-tightened the rotor bolt, then started the engine to see if the smoking issue was cured from installing new valve seals.

Sometimes I hate bikes....Took her out for a good 100km ride, hard and fast. I couldn't see any smoke on eccel or decel but it's hard to see while your riding. Started her up after sitting for a couple of hours blue smoke coming out of the left pipe!! AARRRR... Pulled all the plugs #1 has a bit of oil on it, #2,3, & 4 are dry and all look good. I do a few other things and come back to the bike a bit later start her up and both pipes are not smoking!! ARRRRRR.... all the plugs have oil on the them!! I think tomorrow I'm going to throw a new set of plugs in the bike and say "F" it and just ride it. There's no way I'm pulling that head again.

She's still pushing a pile of blue smoke on start up that's for sure. The strange thing is she doesn't push any smoke on full throttle or hard decel (had trevor and glenn behind me to confirm that). That doesn't make any sense to me, if it were the valve seals I should see smoke on decel for sure by the amount I get after she sits for a time. Anyways, it's back to the garage because as we were riding yesterday the bolt on the end of the cam tensioner came off never had that happen before, thank me lucky stars nothing bad happened.

At the point of sounding redundant, have you tried parking your bike on the center stand to see what happens then?

I always park the bike on it's centre stand Dale. Valve guides? So if the valve guides are worn past service specs, the valve seal won't fit properly and it lets oil pass? just trying to understand how it all works. I don't have the proper tool to measure the valve guide so I don't know where they're at. I measured the valve stems and they were all easily in spec so I hoped for the best with the guides.

if the valve stem wobbles around too much the seals can't seal very well.
