I have a bad clutch basket one of my 78 1000's. i have heard or read that a GS 1100 can be a good up gradeto the 1000 basket. As Isaid I either heard or read that it was possible. As I rendmber the basket( 1100) needs to be turned down on the out side edge so that it will clear the case on the 1000. My question is can anyone confirm this for me ? Has anyone on the site had hands on experance with this mod?

The 1100 basket is smaller diameter, but taller. You would have to shorten it to fit into the 1000 engine. At the end of the day you would have smaller discs so not sure how that would constitute an upgrade. I suggest you chase down a heavy duty back plate kit and install it on your basket. The clutch action is improved by the more solid feeling cush hub, and the idle noise is eliminated as well. My second 1000S has such a clutch and it's a big improvement over stock. If you go with an 1100 clutch you would still have to do this so what's the point of installing a smaller clutch?Ed

i have done these.
the plus is the 1100 basket is solid and doesn't have the weak finger design like the pre-80 1000 baskets...but,
with the 1100 basket being made thinner it holds less plates and you have to add strong strings to keep it from slipping unless running a lock up type of mechanism.
i agree with Ed, modify a factory basket.Comment
