Oil pan removal

Hello dear,

I need to change oil pan gasket because it's leaking oil all around.

Is there something to watch up when removing oil pan...parts that can fall out etc.
As i read in manual there is nothing particular.

It's a newbie question but i just want to be shure.

Removing pans or covers on old motors keep close track of what screw came from which hole. Someone may have stripped threads and may have substituted a different screw or even glued it in place or left it out altogether.

I had luck and all screws come off easy.

Can i now remove oil pan?

Sure, just take it easy, see if a gentle tap will break the seal and try to avoid marking the seal surface and if the old gasket breaks up, reassemble it to make sure all the bits are accounted for. There should be a screen on the pickup somewhere in there so if you have to use a screwdriver to prise it off don't let it go past the gasket and risk stabbing it.

I fall down pretty easy, there was a lot of oil deposits on oil pan, no metal pieces.

Do you know what is the oil passage with o-ring marked on first picture.

It's connected to blank hole on oil sump, doesn't have any sense.
On new gasket there is no hole (even old gasket didn't have hole on this position).

Had anybody tried to remove all this inner part of gasket, I don't realize why is done on this way?
I think I will cut all inner parts and leave only outer where it actually and seals between engine and oil pan, what do you think?

I think it's a bad idea to push a button to find out what it does

Use the o-ring or you won't have good oil pressure.
All the metal and silicone goodies may be in the screen sump pick up.
Get all the old gasket surface off. I use a little bit of RTV but just a see through film.

The OEM pan gasket was design like it was for a reason. Modifying it is not a good idea. While you got your oil pan off, get your oil drain upgraded where it will not stripped on ya. Have a thread steel insert install in it.

Fill 2.4 l of oil in, i tried to crank without starting for a 15 sec, than i tri to start it for a couple of seconds but i oil pressure indicator was all the time on, like there is no presure at all.

How much time is needed to pressurize the system when it's full empty?

Should only take a few spins of the motor.


2.4 liters of oil is 2.536 quarts. I think you are bit shy of oil yet? Isn't a GS550 3-4 quarts? 3.4 L is 3.592 quarts and 4L is 4.226 quarts

Is your oil pressure gauge hooked back up? Did you remember to reinstall the oil filter spring?

2.4L is 2400 mill
3.4 is 3400 mill
4L is 4000 mil

Was your side stand down? Oil pressure should build pretty quick.

Hi,

In manual is stated 2.4l, also that is written on oil refill plug.

Bike was on cetral stand.

Now it ok, I started it again and let run, after some 10 second oil indicator switched off.

My oil pan gasket is beginning to have a small leak . How easy was it to change out the gasket ? You didnt have to pull the engine out did you ?
