1978 gs 1000 e camshaft hold downs

Frustrated !! Purchased this bike afew weeks back and I have come to the conclusion that the previous owner should not be allowed to own a bike , never mind work on one !!
Ok removed valve cover because he had jb weld over a crack that had spread and was still leaking ..
So I removed valve cover grooved out crack and drilled end of crack then repaired with jb weld .. looks ok
Then adjusted valves and all is good !!
Now I was about to put valve cover back on and notice bolts that hold camshaft down between 3 & 4 intake . 3 of 4 bolts sticking up and were broken ... removed the one remaining bolt and hold down clamp to see 3 of the bolts are busted flush into cylinder head !!!!! Grrrrrrrr
Ok cylender heads aluminum ... how the heck am I gunna get those 3 bolts out ?
Do I have to try to drill out a little smaller then thread , and try to colaps in hole ?
Or try drilling small hole and try an ez out on it ?
Or machine hole a bit bigger and re thread ??

So frustrated at the moment ......

Remove the dowels and see if you can walk them out by tapping a small SHARP chisel into the top of the broken bolt, then try to unscrew it by pushing down and turning it anti-clockwise at the same time.

If worse comes to worse I have an extra 1000 head.

Heat with mini torch when trying to back out ?

A nice left handed drill bit, small. And obviously a reversible drill.

The bolts are probably not stuck in the head. The PO over tightened the bolts and stretched them to the point of cracking or breaking them. They should just back out with a small pointy punch turning in a counterclockwise rotation. The left hand drill bit with an easy out works well also.

Well 1 for 1 using a Ez out ... fingers crossed for two more

I tried using a small pointy punch first .. they were siezed in there didnt move !!

Shocked you actually got one out. That's happened in a head of mine, the only fix was a machine shop. I kept having bolts break, 4 in total. In the end I threw the head over a large crevas and put a better one on. Only thing I could figure was the alluminum had reached it's age?? as I was using a torque wrench to torque them on and they kept breaking when I tried to take them out. Did this bike actually run? I mean if that cam journal was only held on by one bolt I can't believe there wasn't a TON of noise.

Easy outs work great if you know how to use them.....most people don't

Left hand drill bits work whether or not you know how.

Just got the 2 nd one out !! The 3 rd is a little more tricky cuzz the frames preventing my drill from getting in there .. may have to bring an angle drill home from work tomorrow

3 rd now !! Lol I have never had problems using an ez out ..never used a backwards drill bit though or heard of one ... ill give my buddy acall who lives in newfoundland and see if he has heard of them ... haha
