    Crank Shaft Oil Seal leak

I am still tracing a small oil leak, it only leaks when the engine is hot which has made it interesting to find. The leak seems to be coming from behind the pickup cover, I think it could be the crank shaft oil seal, can this be replaced without splitting the case? ie knock a screwdriver in it and prize it out, make sure the hole is clean and then gently tap in the new one, or is it just my luck that it has to be done from the inside.

I did mine on my 80' 1000G without having to crack the case, not exactly sure on the 650 model. If memory serves me right I put the seal in the freeze to the night before to help it go in. Make sure you don't put it in backwards, it's easy to do and will leak if you do. The old one pulled out easily enough, drilled 2 small holes making sure I didn't go any further than the seal, self tapping screws and out she came. Didn't even have to drain the oil, just kept her on the kickstand.

So if you remove cover, there are signs of oil on advance plate and signal coils?

Finally got time tonight to take the pickup cover off and inspect, the seal is split so I have ordered a new one.

Yup...I'd say that's the cause of the leak an easy fix. Do a bit of research on here about which way front and back with those seals, I can't remember off hand but it's an easy mistake you don't want to make. Just make sure when you drill the two pilot holes you don't go any further than the seal itself.
