And give us a location, there are probably GSR members a few miles away that would be happy to help you figure out what your bike really needs, for free. -

Welcome to the site.
As Tkent said, Breath.
Starting now don't repeat anything that the shop told you.
Read thru both links given abovel, then re read it again.
Do not post any more questions until you have read it front to back.
Answer the following in list form, run on sentences are hard to read.
Bike Year and model.
Location ( add to your profile)
What parts have you put on (new/used?)
Mechanical ability or want to learn?
What tools do you have?
Are you willing to throw money at the bike to make it safe and reliable?
The reality is these bikes require maintenence. It gets frustrating at times when trying to diagnose the misadventures of the prior owner. If you don't want to or do not think this is a path for you. Sell the bike and cut your losses now.
If you want to stick it out. Read, LISTEN, and follow intructions.Last edited by Mista M; 05-27-2014, 10:01 AM.1984 GS550ES
