Just a little lug at higher speeds
Hey all. I have an'83 gs850, 35xxx miles on it. I bought it about two years ago, and have ridden it several thousand miles. Recently, I had to replace the starter. Took off the carbs, pulled out the starter, put a new one in, etc. I didn't make any adjustments to the carbs, but did pull out the air filter and cleaned it, oiled it and put it all back together. Ever since then I've noticed a slight lag at speed around 55-60 mph or higher. It isn't very prominent (might even be overlooked by someone not mechanically inclined) but its there. Either it isn't noticeable at lower speeds or it doesn't happen then, because I've only noticed it when out on the highway. Any help that you all can offer would be much appreciated!

My questions to you would be, is the chrome and black end cover on the air box well sealed, are the boots from air box to carb inlets properly attached to the carb bodies and were the carb adaptors to the cylinder head nice and soft?

When you took the carbs off you could have caused some sediment in the bottom of the bowls to break off. Could be some clogging in the carbs going on. Probably time to pull the carbs and do a rebuild on them. Like it was mentioned before, check and replace any and all rubber boots and seals that are brittle, cracked, and hard. An air leak can cause a lean problem hence causing your lag.Comment

Tested all of the boots with wd-40 and they're all sealed up tight, and nice and soft. The airbox seems to be all sealed up, and the seals on the air filter are soft and appear to be in fine condition as well. I'll have to pull off the carbs tonight as see if there is any clogging.Comment

I see he didn't report back in so I'll top the story off. You were right, the inner boots could have been put on better and also the snorkel for the airbox was not attached anymore, just kind of sandwiched in there. Took airbox off, everything reattached correctly and it's running normally again.Comment
