    Secondary Gear Backlash

    How can the backlash measurement (.08-.13mm) be obtained at the output flange when there is considerably more than that at the transmission shaft the drive gear goes onto before the gears are even in place? This is with it in gear as I don't know how else to suspend movement of the transmission shaft.

    I remember having this issue a few years ago when I first put this together. Apparently I was too "loose" because I broke a couple drive gear teeth a couple weeks ago. I really would like to get this right this time...

    Can't you remove the protective cover over the drive gear and stop the output shaft from turning, then use a light touch to rock the output flange back and forth?

    What compound are you using to check pinion depth? (gear mesh)

      I suppose I could remove that plug, but then I'de have to wait a couple more weeks for another one. The shop manual does it with the pug already installed and no instruction how to overcome this issue.

        You'll will almost have to remove the plug to hold the nut stationary. Either that or use a 'very' light touch when rocking the output flange and feel for when the gear teeth just touch.

        Have you or are you going to check the pre-load on both assemblies? If you do, keep in mind the used bearings will have less pre-load than new.

          I suppose I could drift the plug out and worst case RTV it going back in, not like its holding alot back or would be difficult to remove/replace after its all sewn back up.

          I reset the preload. I have a screw driver torque wrench that gets low enough to do it.

          These shafts are great when they are running, but holy crap they suck to have to work on!

            If it were me readjusting the pre-load with used bearings, I'd error on the low side.
