load the stock springs and see...
if it works just use 3 stock and 3 HD...see how that goes.

    oh,
i never start a bike in gear...at least the GS stuff with weak starter clutches.
run zero free play and put it against the wall and pop it in gear...go from there.

I knew I should have kept the old stock springs. I put the heavies in as a cheap band aid fix for slipping.

          do it!
          do it!
          do it!
you didn't by chance have the inner hub out did you?
if so see if it will spin by hand with the pressure plate removed...if not you may have other problems.

I did have the inner hub out. I'll check that too.

              i should have said basket.
if not re-installed correctly your clutch will be direct drive(drop in gear with clutch in...bike dies).
if the inner hub turns with PP removed then your good.

Ok, it was a misaligned outer basket. There are two notches behind the basket that accept two tabs from the oil pump. Once I fit them together properly the basket seated all he way. Thanks for all the help, cheers, JT

                  john i'm glad i could help..you listened, a lot don't
what you found = direct drive because the inner hub was locked tight against the basket because of lack of clearance due to the pump ears not being engaged into the basket gear...
let me know when you need a lock up

The image of the inner hub being locked up was in the back of my head as I tried to figure out what I was looking at and experiencing You guys are a fantastic resource.
