I use a DRZ-2 non O ring 530 chain on my street race bikes and my pro et bar bike and it's good for 11,500 pounds tensile strength which is good for over 300 hp

First post. I have a 81 GS1100e. PO had a non-oring chain with an o-ring master link. Came apart on the freeway. Now I'm converting to a 530 chain and new sprockets. The gear ratios you guys are talking about has me stumped. The shop ordering my new parts is getting the same number of teeth as the old one. There book(jt) says nothing about needing to change from (stock)15/42 to some other set. What should I get?Comment

A new shop. Z1 enterprises will do the conversion for you.First post. I have a 81 GS1100e. PO had a non-oring chain with an o-ring master link. Came apart on the freeway. Just did my 81 1100e...50 rear 17 front..that's stock gear ratio. No signature :(Comment

Dont get a 15t countershaft it will be to small of diameter to give enough clearance for your swingarm. The reason for going to a 17t countershaft is that the 15t 630 countershaft is the same diameter as the 17t 530 countershaft sprocket. So to maintain stock gearing in a 530 set up is 17/48First post. You obviously know more about these things than me but I did 50 tooth on both my 1100s and they are pulling exactly the same rpm as before the conversion.Dont get a 15t countershaft it will be to small of diameter to give enough clearance for your swingarm. The 18/50 =2.77 gearing is very close to stock as is the 17/48 =2.82 gearing but neither is exactly the same as the stock 15/42 = 2.80 gearing. The reason I prefer the 17t 530 on the front is that it allows for enough clearance around the swingarm and is the same diameter as the 15t in a 630. I know the 16t will clear but I would not go smaller than a 16t on the 530 set up or the chain might just rub the swingarm to much.

thanks for the explanation. I also have 17 on the front. Tell me, what is the performance difference between a 48 & 50 rear sprocket? 17/50 =2.94 which is lower than stock gearing. On my GS1150 I like the 16/48 =3.00 but the 17/50 you use is a good combo also better than stock IMO.Comment

I got over 50K on my original 630, so I put another 630 on. Turning the bolt was impossible, so I used a Motion Pro Clutch tool http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...=c&matchtype=e that I had to hold the bolt as I took it off and put it back on.^^Second that notion. I bought my conversion kit from Rob at Z1 (as well as my V&H/4-1) and was ready to install but sadly, the front sprocket lug would not cooperate.
Thank goodness for friends like Bill. He gave me his 630 (which was in better shape) until I'm able to have that lug removed with an impact gun.
Good luck!

To loosen that nut, before you cut the chain lean over the bike with your right foot on the brake and use a socket and breaker bar to turn it loose. I find it always works. My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot :eagerness: and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. Sprocket Hub Woes
^^Oh, man! Bill and I tried the breaker bar with the rear brake engaged as well as with a crow-bar inserted between the rear rim...I may have pics somewhere.
My bike is separated from me right now and it will be some time before I head back to Delaware from my current location in Florida.
