Valve shims, results and other questions

Afternoon,

I just got done going through my valves and checking tolerances. A huge thanks to Steve for the spreadsheet, big help and time saver right there!

Here are the results I pulled.

Exhaust: 1; 0.06 2; 0.05 3; 0.02 4; 0.08
Shims: 1; 2.60 2; 2.60 3;2.45 4; 2.50
Needed: 1; 2.60 2; 2.60 3;2.40 4; 2.50


Intake: 1; 0.02 2; 0.07 3; 0.02 4; 0.02
Shims: 1; 2.65 2; 2.54 3; 2.70 4; 2.65
Needed: 1; 2.60 2; 2.54 3; 2.65 4; 2.60

Couple things, the feeler gages I have only go down to 0.04mm so anything that was tight with that I entered as 0.02 so it would show as tight. Is it something I should be worried about getting a gage that shows .03? Or just go ahead and replace them?

#2 intake is supposed to be a 2.55mm shim but my measurments consistently came up with 2.54mm.

Again a huge thanks to those who posted the tutorials, a tremendous help walked me right through it. Hardly no issues at all. Just some issues using the zip tie method on the exhaust valves.

When you order shims I'd get some extras so you can move those .02 valves two sizes if necessary. Step them one time at first but then recheck, and step them again if necessary.

Ok that makes sense, I will be making use of the shim club here, a great way to help others with my old shims rather than have them sit on a shelf.

The .04 is good as your small gauge. While .03 is spec I'd change anything tighter than a .04 anyway. These valves generally tighten up with use so having one slightly loose at .09 is better than having it go tight on you and you might even be able to extend your next adjustment if you have to if enough of them are at the loose end of the spec. Like Ed says just double check the tighter ones in case you need to go 2 sizes.

Just a suggestion: take the shim out of Ex 3, put a quarter in its place. Move that 2.45 shim to the other places that have minimal clearance, see how much clearance you have with the 2.45 in that position. Like Nessism said, you might get by with one shim size change, it might take more. That 2.45 is several sizes smaller, so you will be able to measure all the extra clearance. Just enter the new (extra) clearance in the spreadsheet, it will tell you what you need. Don't forget that you might be able to swap one of your 2.65s in where your 2.70 is.

One other suggestion: although you may have measured that one shim as a 2.54, enter it as a 2.55, as that is the standard size. When the sheet suggests you need a 2.49 next time around, you will NEVER find one, you will have to settle for a 2.50.

One final thought: did you really have NO "X" shims? Rather unusual, but possible.

Thanks for the tips, already planned on swapping the 2.65 for the 2.70. I will change the 2.54 in the sheet.

And yes non of the shims had a x on them all were clearly legible as well.
