New Rings and New Ring Gap

Hey guys, I'm working on rebuilding my top end completely. I've honed the cylinders and cleaned the thing up, but I've been having problems with the rings. I went to measure the end-gap and the measurements are at .35mm to .50mm. Spec is between .10mm and .30mm. What should I do? I got these rings from Japan so I seriously doubt it'd even be worth the trouble shipping them back. Since the service limit is at .70mm should I just put them in and use them? Thanks for the help guys.

Are you sure the rings are square in the bore? usually by pushing them down with a piston. If you are off by just a little bit the gap will measure larger than it is.

Yeah, I was using a piston to push them down.

The rings are loose because cylinder is worn too large. It will run but how loose is the piston in the cylinder?

I have thrown engines together with very loose rings/pstons, they have ran OK, but I doubt if they would have lasted very long.

As long as your piston to wall clearance is .004", or less, you are fine. Put the rings in & run them.
