SOS! Locked clutch?? 79 1000l

Please help me find the gremlin

i had the clutch basket springs replaced. Reinstalled everything as have done successfully before. Now bike jumps into gear when shifting from neutral to 1st or 2nd with clutch lever pulled, and rear wheel rotates with lever pulled. I soaked the clutch plates overnight clutch lever pull feels great with plenty of tension and the actuator moves.

at a total loss. Could this be an issues with basket installation?

very frustrated as this is my only bike after selling Stratoliner..

Before you assembled the clutch cover, did you try the clutch lever and make sure it moved the pressure plate in and out.

I cannot check pressure plate movement without installing the cover since the vertical rod to which the clutch cable attaches is part of the cover. Even so, the resistance in the clutch lever is firm and the rod rotates clockwise as it should.

the basket is NOT engaged into the oil pump gear properly.
this will cause DIRECT DRIVE.

Actually, you might have the oil pump drive gear engaged correctly but have the big washers reversed, not allowing the inner hub to freewheel. Pull the clutch cover, clutch springs, pressure plate & clutch plates. If the inner hub won't spin freely you have the washers in the wrong places. Like Terry said, check the oil pump gear dogs are in the receiver slots in the hub too.

rule of thumb on these clutches...
after tightening the large nut always make sure the inner hub turns...if not you fubared the assembly process.

Thank you all very much. I reached around the basket and moved the gears to make sure the basket engaged the oil pump gear, and now the inner hub turns freely. Amateur mistake.
