Help figuring out what broke off in my engine GS550L 1982

Hi everyone.
I need some help figuring out what this piece is. Long story short I was replacing the clutch basket on my gs550L 1982 and didn't align the basket gear with the oilpump gear and broke it without even realising it. I turned on the bike and sure enough there was something rattling in the engine and then I think I heard something snap. I found two pieces on the carter ... part of the gear from the oilpump and the piece of metal that appears on the picture. I replaced the gear of the pump and the engine seems to be running fine yet....(I know that piece of metal whent somewhere) .... I can see where that part went by removing the clutch plate, and I don't want to disassemble the gearbox since the engine seems fine .... can someone help me identify what that piece is and where it goes to see if i'll have to open everything up.

Not sure...I can't think of many internal engine parts that are painted.
I'm probably wrong but it looks like something somebody shoved into the clutch to break the clutch hub nut loose. Lol
That's what I would do. Haha
I'll be curious to find out what it is.

If that part was inside your engine then you found your problem right there.

Sorry just to make it clear ...... When removing the clutch cover I CAN'T see where that part goes ...
Loud et ...the part is not painted it just looks that way on the picture

Are you sure it is metal?
I am thinking just a brittle piece of your old gasket.
If the broken edge inside is not shiny then that would be my guess.
The old gaskets get hard yet brittle as opposed to soft and flexible of a new.

Lokks like some sort of windage screen. I have never seen inside that vintage 550 engine.

That part definitely looks a lot like what i found .... what is it? I'll see if I can take a pic from under the carter maybe it will be able to see

fiche calls it an oil seperator
effectively a windage screen to stop sump oil from spalshing up onto the crank and robbing engine poewr.
It looks like you would have to split the cases to get it replaced.
If the grinding stops and you note no performance issue I say gold plate the part that came out and hang it on a chain around your neck.

Might want to pull the sump off and see what else is bouncing around..
